Kazuyo Sejima, the Pritzker Prize–winning co-founder of SANAA, has never renovated a Machiya house before. Drawn to the century-old house’s character, she spent a year and a half in design along with SANAA Partner Yoshitaka Tanase before construction began. Her renovation does not compete with the house: it preserves the timber frame and earthen walls, then introduces what her architecture is known for — light, openness, and a floating stillness.
